No, wet AMD cannot turn back into dry AMD. However, it's important to note that dry AMD can progress to wet AMD in about 10-15% of cases. When this happens, abnormal blood vessels grow and leak beneath the macula, causing what's known as "neovascular AMD."
This is why it's crucial to get treatment quickly if you develop Show Full Answer
Wet and Dry AMD are two related but different diseases. Dry is a slow, gradual deterioration of the cells in the macula, in my case caused by fatty deposits called drusen. Wet is when abnormal blood vessels under the retina leak or bleed, and this can happen quickly, often in eyes experiencing dry AMD. I was diagnosed with dry at age 40 in both eyes. At age 64, one eye also developed wet and I temporarily lost all my central vision in the wet eye, but regained most of it with an injection. But that eye is still slowly deteriorating from dry. People say dry “turns” into wet because it often happens after a period of only being dry, but really, they have just developed a second, related problem.
My door told me Friday that I had both wet and dry in both eyes and should start shots for both,. different meds.at the same time in my next appointment. Am loosing confidence in him
Wow, this is the first I heard of this. I was diagnosed with WET AMD over 26 years ago when I woke from a coma due to the West Nile Virus where I almost died. I was sick for over a year. Since then, I have been getting Avastin injections for that long too. A few months ago, I was told that my left eye had stopped bleeding and would no longer need injections. It didn't mean that I was cured....my doctor said that it was now considered DRY AMD. My next injection is tomorrow and I will certainly question my new doctor since my current doctor just retired. So I would love to know what to expect from this.
Thank you Sandy
