My experience: With about 25 years of progressive AMD, I can see well enough to read large black print on a real white background. I was skeptical when opthamologist told me I needed cataract surgery, particularly as the opthamologist who diagnosed AMD and beginning of cataracts told me cataract surgery could speed up AMD. I decided to go ahead with surgery as I felt I would increase the time I could function visually. I wa not elgible for multiple focus lens. The opthamologist did not discuss with me the options for correction of the fixed lens, and gave me distance focus. I feel this was a very bad mistake, as I have been wearing glasses for nearsightedness for 70 years, and I could read without glasses. Now, I can't see in the distance anyway due to GA, I can't read due to wrong focal length. So I would strongly suggest having glasses that will give you the vision that you will have when your lens are put in, and determine which correction you want the lens to have. Hopefully you can afford the 6K for variable focus and they work for you. I have a cousin that is older than I, and he can see to read and drive with no glasses, so they do work if your brain is agile enough to accomodate.

Is cataract surgery worth it with intermediate dry AMD?

This is an important decision that your family member should discuss directly with their ophthalmologist, as the answer depends on their specific situation.

Generally, intermediate dry AMD affects central vision, making activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces more difficult. If cataracts are also clouding their vision, cataract surgery could potentially improve their overall visual clarity.

However, intermediate dry AMD means there's already some damage to the macula (the part of the eye responsible for central vision). While cataract surgery can remove the clouded lens, it won't repair any existing AMD-related vision loss.

Key considerations:

* The ophthalmologist can assess whether removing the cataracts would provide meaningful vision improvement despite the AMD
* Intermediate dry AMD can progress over time, so timing matters
* AREDS2 supplements are recommended for intermediate dry AMD to help slow progression
* Managing AMD through lifestyle changes (not smoking, healthy diet, exercise) is important regardless of cataract surgery

The eye doctor can help weigh whether the potential vision benefits from cataract surgery outweigh the risks, given the current stage of AMD. Many people with AMD do benefit from cataract surgery when cataracts are significantly affecting their vision.
