Was diagnosed in 2023 and was never recommended for my right eye which is dry and as my new appointment (new office / new Doctor) he suspects the beginning of wet in my other eye and recommended these supplements. TIA

When I considered which AREDS to take, it seemed to me that that AREDS2 was better. Yesterday my retina specialist told me that I could take a CVS or Walgreens version of which ever AREDS I prefer because it's so expensive. Check the ingredients to see what you think is best for you.

It sounds like you're navigating a lot of new information with your recent appointment β€” that's a lot to take in! While hearing directly from other myAMDteam members about their personal experiences with AREDS2 is best done in the community feed, here's what's generally known about these supplements.

AREDS2 is the current recommended formula, and doctors tend to prefer it over the original AREDS. It's typically recommended for people with intermediate AMD in one or both eyes, or late AMD in one eye β€” which fits your situation well. The AREDS2 formula contains:

- Vitamin C β€” 500 mg
- Vitamin E β€” 400 IU
- Lutein β€” 10 mg
- Zeaxanthin β€” 2 mg
- Zinc β€” 80 mg
- Copper β€” 2 mg

It won't reverse existing damage, but research shows it can help slow progression and may help protect your other eye. A few important cautions to keep in mind:

- The higher doses of vitamins and minerals may affect digestion
- These supplements can interact with other medications you're taking
- If you smoke or have ever smoked, be sure to tell your doctor, as beta-carotene (found in the older AREDS formula) has been linked to increased lung cancer risk in smokers β€” AREDS2 does not contain beta-carotene

Always run the supplements by your doctor before starting, especially given any other medications you may be on.
