If the condition only affects one eye initially, you might not notice vision changes in early stages.
The progression rate varies for each person. Some studies show that about 26% of older adults with severe AMD developed central geographic atrophy (advanced stage) within 10 years. You can help protect your vision by:
• Taking AREDS2 vitamin supplements
• Eating a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, fish and nuts
• Exercising regularly
• Maintaining healthy blood pressure
• Quitting smoking if you smoke
• Getting regular eye exams
While these steps won't cure AMD, they may help slow its progression and protect your remaining vision.
