I am going to sound like a big baby here, but I need some advice. My optometrist advised me to take the AREDs2 vitamins, so I took them for a day and a half and I got a terrible headache and eye pressure plus some very slight nausea, this would start occurring about 2 hours after taking a dose, so I stopped taking them and called him. He said he thought it might be unrelated as sinuses are an issue right now due to it being harvest time in the fields, which made sense because I do have sinus… read more

Members experiencing nausea and other side effects from AREDS2 vitamins shared helpful tips for managing reactions to this supplement for macular degeneration. Several members found relief by switching from gel caps to chewable tablets, taking the vitamins before bed with a protein snack, or buying the individual nutrient components separately to avoid problematic additives like dyes. A recurring theme was that reactions may be caused by manufacturing additives rather than the vitamins themselves, and that working closely with a retinal specialist helps find the best approach for each person.

Thank you Jill, it is what it is. My vision is good now besides getting new prescription glasses, I’m not showing signs although my scans are not good. I’m looking forward to my retina specialist appointment. I feel for everyone on this site, glad I found this because it’s so nice to have a forum where we can all share our experiences and recommendations. Have a great weekend!

Kara, when I went to the opthomologist I told him about your experience and asked why the chewable wouldn't give the same side effects as the gel caps. He said sometimes it isn't the actual vitamins and minerals we take the pills for, it can be the additives the manufacturer puts in that we are reacting to. For example, he said one lady was having a reaction to the dye they used in the pills, so she instead went to the store and bought the vitamin and mineral components separately and took them that way to avoid the dye. He told me to experiment with different types (chewable vs gel cap) and different manufacturers because they use different additives. If all else fails I can get the components separately and do what his other patient did.

Yes, got them on Amazon. Not sure why these don’t cause the nausea the liquid gel caps do

Jill, I was diagnosed two weeks ago and told to take the Areds vitamins 2x/day. I have overwhelming nausea and even vomited. My husband found the areds in chewable tablet form. For some reason I can tolerate them fine. Hope that helps

P.s. if you ever want to try another one I take one on Amazon. It's less expensive. But it still has lutein and Zeaxanthin .
