Great question — and an understandable one. Geographic atrophy (GA) is called the "advanced stage" of dry AMD, but that doesn't mean the condition stops progressing. Unfortunately, it can continue to worsen over time.

Here's what "advanced stage" really means in this context:

- It refers to how far the disease has developed in terms of damage to the macula
- Enough cells in the macula have died to cause permanent blind spots (called scotomas)
- Central vision is significantly affected, making daily tasks like reading, driving, and cooking more difficult
- Peripheral (side) vision remains unaffected So while GA is the most severe stage of dry AMD, the damage can keep spreading. The blind spots can grow larger over time as more macula cells are lost.

It's also worth knowing that in 10–15% of cases, advanced dry AMD can develop into wet AMD, where abnormal blood vessels leak fluid under the macula. This can progress quickly, so staying in close contact with your eye doctor is really important.

The good news is there are FDA-approved treatments and lifestyle steps that can help slow progression — so it's always worth discussing your options with your doctor.
