It is possible to have both wet AMD and geographic atrophy at the same time. Geographic atrophy is the advanced stage of dry AMD, but the two forms can overlap. With wet AMD, the main concern is the formation of abnormal, leaky blood vessels beneath the macula. Over time, as this damage heals, scar tissue can form, which may lead to larger blind spots and more severe central vision changes — which can look similar to geographic atrophy.
Key things to watch for include:
- Blind spots or blank areas in your central vision
- Straight lines appearing wavy or distorted
- Difficulty recognizing faces
- Trouble seeing in low light
- Loss of color distinction
