The good news is that most people with dry AMD do not go completely blind. However, central vision can worsen over time, especially as the condition progresses through its stages. Here's how vision changes can vary by stage:
- Early dry AMD: You may have little to no symptoms, or only mild blurriness in central vision
- Intermediate dry AMD: Blurriness may cover a larger area, and blind spots (called scotomas) can begin to appear
- Geographic atrophy (advanced stage): Central vision loss becomes more noticeable, with larger blind spots and difficulty with tasks like reading or recognizing faces
One important thing to note — AMD does not affect peripheral (side) vision, so complete blindness is rare.
