It's important to understand that dry AMD progresses very slowly over multiple years. If it only affects one eye, you may not even notice vision loss in the early stages.

The risk of severe vision loss increases if dry AMD advances to geographic atrophy or progresses to wet AMD. About 90 percent of legal blindness in people with AMD occurs in those who have wet AMD, not dry.

Even with vision changes, most people retain their peripheral vision. Central vision loss can make tasks like reading and driving difficult, but complete blindness is rare.
