Age-related macular degeneration is a top cause of loss of vision in people over the age of 60 and primarily affects people who are over 50. While the risk of developing AMD increases as you get older, it can also occur at younger ages due to other risk factors.
In general, it is very uncommon to develop true age-related macular degeneration at less than 50 years of age. There is a group of retinal conditions known as macular dystrophies that are genetically determined and may mimic the clinical findings of AMD.
It is important to be evaluated by a retinal specialist specifically trained in the management of these disorders in order to obtain an accurate diagnosis.

While age may be the strongest risk factor for developing AMD, there are other environmental and genetic risk factors to keep in mind. Risk factors like smoking or family history could contribute to developing AMD at a younger age.
Modifiable risk factors are lifestyle or environmental factors that can be changed. The lifestyle factors associated with an increased risk of AMD include:
Smoking not only increases your risk of developing AMD, but it can also contribute to early onset of the condition. Making lifestyle changes, such as wearing protective sunglasses outside, working with a dietitian, and asking your doctor for help quitting smoking, can improve your overall health and possibly slow the progression of AMD.
While you can make changes to your lifestyle, there are risk factors that are genetic and cannot be changed.
Those with a family history of macular degeneration may have an increased risk of AMD. If you have a parent or sibling who has been diagnosed with AMD, you may have a 50 percent chance of developing AMD.
If you have been diagnosed with AMD, let your siblings and children know about their risk for AMD. It’s important for those at risk to know and watch out for the early signs of AMD.

There are two types of AMD, dry AMD and wet AMD. Dry AMD is more common than wet AMD. With dry AMD, the macula thins and drusen (tiny deposits of fats and proteins) build up. Vision loss happens slowly with dry AMD.
With wet AMD, new blood vessels grow under the retina. Wet AMD can lead to loss of vision faster than dry AMD.
AMD is a progressive condition. Dry AMD can progress to wet AMD, so it is important to follow up with your eye doctor regularly.

There are steps you can take to slow the progression of dry and wet AMD. Your ophthalmologist can help you understand what treatments, procedures, and lifestyle changes can help protect your vision.
Although some of the risk factors associated with AMD are genetic, there are still ways you can be proactive before receiving a diagnosis.
One of the first steps is to visit your eye doctor regularly for an eye exam. Eye exams allow your provider to detect early signs of AMD, like drusen. These fat and protein deposits under your retina may not cause any noticeable symptoms, and you certainly won’t be able to see them in the mirror. But your eye doctor can detect them in a dilated eye exam. While you can have small drusen and not have AMD, having both small and large drusen can be signs of AMD.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends comprehensive eye exams for everyone by age 40. If you’re over 40 and haven’t started routine exams, now is the time to get one on the books.
Early detection gives you the best possible chance to slow progression and avoid complications like central vision loss or legal blindness.
Another way to protect your vision is to consider lifestyle changes to reduce your risk. Examples include:
If you develop AMD, your doctor may recommend AREDS 2 supplements. AREDS 2 supplements contain a variety of vitamins and minerals that may slow down the progression of AMD.
If you are at risk for AMD, your eye doctor may recommend Amsler grid monitoring.
The Amsler grid is a test that you can do at home to monitor your vision. It can help detect vision changes such as seeing lines that are wavy or missing. Each eye should be checked separately, and any vision changes should be reported to your eye doctor.
It’s important to understand that if you have been diagnosed or are at risk for early AMD, it does not mean that it will result in total blindness. With AMD, your side vision is not affected. Identifying AMD in the early stages and receiving early treatments or interventions may slow the progression of the condition.
