Valeda Light Therapy is a newly FDA-authorized treatment specifically for dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It uses photobiomodulation technology, which delivers light at three specific wavelengths to improve retinal health, reduce inflammation, and enhance visual clarity.

The treatment is administered by eye care professionals in a clinical setting. Each session takes about 4 minutes, and a typical treatment course involves 9 sessions spread over 3-4 weeks (3 sessions per week). Clinical trials showed significant vision improvement and preservation lasting up to 24 months, particularly in people with early or intermediate stages of AMD. The treatment also showed promise in reducing progression to severe geographic atrophy. Importantly, no significant side effects were reported during trials.

This represents a breakthrough as it's the first therapy that may actively improve visual acuity and address underlying retinal cell damage in dry AMD, rather than just slowing disease progression.
