Does Blue Light Cause AMD?

So far, there’s no strong evidence that typical blue light exposure in everyday life causes macular degeneration. But blue light can be part of the problem, especially for certain people or at high doses.

AMD involves progressive damage to the macula (part of the retina). The macula lets you see straight ahead, which is your central vision. As AMD advances, vision loss can impair daily tasks like reading, driving, and even recognizing faces.

Blue light’s high energy allows it to reach the retina. Here, blue light may promote the production of free radicals, which are molecules that cause damage.

Fortunately, the eye likely filters some blue light before it reaches the retina. After age 65, most people’s eyes lose half of their natural sun protection ability.

Rather than worrying too much over the minor glow from screens, protecting your eyes against bright sunlight is a more important first step.

AMD is a complex disease. It’s the result of many factors working together over time. Age is the biggest risk factor (starting at age 50).

Genetics also plays a role. Some people inherit a higher risk of AMD from their parents.

In addition, smoking greatly increases the chance of developing AMD and can make the disease progress faster. Other factors, such as high blood pressure, obesity, and poor nutrition, can also contribute to AMD.

Blue light from digital devices may not be as big a concern when it comes to your likelihood of developing AMD. Other factors are more proven to put you at risk.

While you can’t do anything to change your age or your genetics, you can take steps to protect your eye health.

Smoking is one of the most important AMD risk factors that you can control. Quitting smoking should be a top priority to protect your vision and overall health.

In addition, focus on a nutritious diet with plenty of colorful fruits and vegetables. Leafy greens, pumpkin, and other vibrant produce are rich in protective natural compounds.

If you have high blood pressure or have a high body weight, ask your healthcare provider what you can do to lower the potential impacts on your eyes.

How Does Blue Light Affect People With AMD?

Blue light has the potential to harm the retina and promote faster progression of AMD. It’s just not clear if everyday exposure to screens is enough to make a big difference.

Should People With AMD Avoid Screens?

For now, experts don’t advise people with AMD to stop using computers or smartphones because of concerns about blue light. However, if screens make your eyes feel tired or dry, taking regular breaks and adjusting your workspace may help you feel more comfortable.

Evidence doesn’t support wearing blue light glasses to prevent retinal damage. Despite marketing claims, most experts say these blue-light blocking lenses don’t really work.

Although there may be no harm in wearing blue light glasses, you can take more effective action against AMD and general eye strain.

Take Steps To Reduce Eye Strain

If your eyes are sensitive to screens, limit your exposure. Take breaks and dim the lighting on your electronic devices. You can also use a blue light screen filter, which is a setting built into many tablets, smartphones, and computers.

Wear Protective Eyewear That Works

When it comes to blue light exposure, the biggest concern is protecting your eyes against the sun. Wearing UV-blocking sunglasses is essential, especially if you work outdoors or participate in outdoor sports, like skiing or boating.

Protecting your eyes from UV light doesn’t just help with AMD. It can also reduce your risk of cataracts, another common eye disease.

People who take certain medications may be particularly vulnerable to eye damage from the sun. Find out from your healthcare provider if you should take additional precautions because of your medications, age, or other risk factors.
