Hi
I am starting my 3rd session with the Valeda light therapy. My sessions have been spaced out every 6 months. I meet with my ophthalmologist this past Monday. My eyes are continuing to be stable. I’m will be starting my 3rd session this Monday. So far so good. Insurance is now covering the costs so I’m trying everything I can to slow the progression.

I thought that the test was only on 100 subjects and that more rigorous tests are currently being done. I think I am going to wait until the more thorough tests results come out later in the year. Interesting the AI response did not mention this. Also, a higher incidence of people turning to wet AMD.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is definitely generating buzz in the AMD community! It's a light-based therapy that uses specific wavelengths of light to support retinal health, reduce inflammation, and help preserve vision.

The big news is that in November 2024, the FDA authorized a PBM device called the Valeda Light Delivery System specifically for dry AMD — which is a significant milestone since there have been very few treatment options for dry AMD until now. Here's what clinical trials showed about Valeda:

- Vision improvement and preservation lasting up to 24 months
- Most effective for those in early or intermediate stages of dry AMD
- Fewer people progressed to severe late-stage AMD
- No significant side effects were reported

The treatment itself is pretty straightforward — you sit at the device while an eye care professional administers light sessions lasting about 4 minutes each. A full course is typically 9 sessions over 3 to 4 weeks.

There's also an interesting case report where a person with dry AMD used a PBM device at home for 8 months and saw dramatic improvement in drusen (deposits under the retina). That said, this is just one case and results like that aren't guaranteed or fully understood yet.

It's worth asking your eye doctor whether Valeda or any PBM therapy might be a good fit for your specific situation!
