What are the results from the new light treatment for dry AMD?

The FDA recently authorized a photobiomodulation device called the Valeda Light Delivery System for treating dry AMD. This breakthrough treatment uses light at three specific wavelengths to improve retinal health, reduce inflammation, and enhance visual clarity.

In clinical trials, participants who received Valeda treatment experienced significant vision improvement and preservation lasting up to 24 months. The treatment showed particular benefit for people in the early or intermediate stages of dry AMD.

Researchers also observed a reduction in the number of people who progressed to severe geographic atrophy, which is the late-stage form of dry AMD where retinal cells break down and cause central vision loss.

The treatment is administered by eye care professionals and involves nine sessions - three sessions per week for three to four weeks. Each session lasts about four minutes per eye.

No significant side effects were reported in the clinical trials, making this an encouraging option for people with dry AMD who previously had limited treatment choices beyond lifestyle changes and dietary supplements.

It's important to note that this treatment may be most beneficial for those with intermediate AMD, and may not provide the same benefits for more advanced stages like central geographic atrophy or wet AMD.
