I was told that there are changes and the AMD is worse. My question is, once there starts to be changes, does that mean the changes will continue more quickly or can it still progress slowly over years?

I wish I could say I had dry AMD. It’s a heck of a lot better than wet.AMD

Does dry AMD always progress quickly once changes begin?

Not necessarily. Dry AMD progression is unpredictable and varies from person to person. Even after noticing changes, your AMD can still progress slowly over years. Some people experience rapid progression, while others take years to advance, and there's everything in between.

The fact that you had stable AMD for five years shows your condition was progressing very slowly. Now that changes have appeared, it doesn't automatically mean things will speed up dramatically.

What affects progression?

Dry AMD typically progresses slowly through different stages over multiple years. However, the rate can vary based on:

- The stage of AMD you're in
- Whether large drusen deposits are present
- Your overall eye health
- Lifestyle factors like smoking, diet, and exercise

Important considerations:

About 10-15% of people with dry AMD eventually develop wet AMD, which progresses much faster. This is why tracking vision changes daily is so important—you want to catch any sudden changes early.

What you can do:

- Use an Amsler grid daily to monitor vision changes
- Report any new symptoms immediately to your eye doctor
- Ask about AREDS2 supplements if you haven't already
- Maintain healthy lifestyle habits (no smoking, healthy diet, regular exercise)
- Continue regular monitoring with your ophthalmologist

The progression isn't predetermined—staying proactive with monitoring and treatment can help you maintain good vision.
