An OCT scan allows for detailed imaging of the macula, the area of the eye affected by AMD. The macula allows you to do things requiring focus on details, like reading, driving, and recognizing faces.

How Is OCT Used To Diagnose AMD?

OCT is an important tool for diagnosing AMD, but it’s not the only one. Doctors usually make an AMD diagnosis by combining a clinical eye exam with imaging.

OCT can be especially helpful because early AMD may not cause symptoms. You may not notice early warning signs of vision loss until the condition has already affected your macula. With OCT, your doctor can look for specific findings that point to AMD.

What Does OCT Show for Macular Degeneration?

An OCT scan of an eye with AMD may show:

  • Drusen Yellowish deposits of fat and protein called drusen can build up under the retina. Small drusen are common in older adults (age 50 and older), but a large amount or large-sized drusen point to macular degeneration.
  • Macular thickness variations — These are areas where the retina looks thicker, thinner, or uneven. Thinning suggests atrophy, a term that describes shrinkage or deterioration.
  • Fluid — Pockets of fluid or blood in or under the retina may be a sign of wet AMD, which suggests more advanced disease.
  • Changes over time — Your doctor will look for differences between your current scan and earlier OCT images.

How Does OCT Help Monitor AMD Progression?

After an AMD diagnosis, OCT can help your doctor monitor progression — whether the condition is stable (staying the same), worsening, or otherwise changing. Because OCT scans show the retina in layers, your doctor can compare your latest scan with earlier scans to look for changes over time.

This comparison may show whether drusen have changed, the macula is thinning, or new fluid has appeared. Such changes in your eye health can help your doctor decide on the best treatment and how often you need follow-up visits.

Monitoring is also important because AMD can be different in each eye. One eye may have early or intermediate dry AMD, while the other eye may have more advanced changes. It’s also possible for AMD to be present in only one eye.

Regular OCT scans may help your eye doctor catch important changes sooner, sometimes before you notice a difference in your sight.

How Does OCT Show Whether AMD Treatment Is Working?

For geographic atrophy, an advanced form of dry AMD, imaging tests can help doctors measure areas of atrophy and watch how they change. Catching geographic atrophy early and starting treatment right away can help slow its progression.

OCT scans are useful, but they aren’t perfect. Your doctor will still consider your symptoms, vision tests, clinical exams, and sometimes other images when making treatment decisions.

What Happens During an OCT Scan?

Knowing what to expect may make the scan feel easier. An OCT eye test is noninvasive and usually takes only a few minutes in your eye doctor’s office. You typically don’t need to prepare in advance. It often happens right after your regular eye exam.

  • Eye drops — Your doctor may put dilating drops in your eyes before the scan so they can get better images.
